Module Objective: To develop a theoretical background in coastal engineering  with emphasis to governing physics of ocean waves, tides and coastal processes to apply in the management of the Sri Lankan coastal zone

Learning Outcomes Expected:

1: Define the coastal and estuarine environment, coastal  engineering and coastal engineer’s role in managing the coast.

2: Apply linear (Airy) wave theory and Newton’s laws to calculate the physical properties of surface gravity waves and astronomical tides such as wave celerity, surface elevation, bottom velocities, pressure etc.

3: Interpret coastal processes: wave generation, shoaling, refraction, reflection, diffraction and surf zone processes and natural hazards such as tsunami, storm surge and implications of climate change.

4: Develop structural (hard) and non-structural (soft) solutions for the better management of the coast.

5:   Describe Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Sri Lanka.

6:  Demonstrate effective communication skills by explaining ideas clearly, effectively and confidently.
